The European Business Council (EBC) is the trade policy arm of 17 European National Chambers of Commerce and Business Organisations represented in Japan.  First established in 1972, the EBC works to improve the trade and investment environment for European companies in Japan. The EBC currently represents more than 3,000 local European companies and individuals who are members of their national chambers of commerce.  More than 350 companies participate directly in the EBCfs 29 industry committees and subcommittees, whose work aims to improve the local business environment in a wide variety of economic sectors.  

The EBC has released the 2006 edition of its premier annual policy report, gNew Leadership - Renewed Reform -The EBC Report on the Japanese Business Environment 2006.h  This 102-page report was published in an attempt to identify the unresolved issues affecting trade and investment in Japan and to provide constructive suggestions for improving the Japanese business environment for the benefit of all concerned.  

EBCfs report, which covers 31 key areas, recommends a suite of specific measures relating to product approval, regulatory burden, regulatory transparency, regulatory oversight, standards harmonisation, accounting practices and financial supervision, procurement, government influence in the private sector, tariffs, taxation, border control, and the legal environment.
