Where Are We Now With The White Paper?

This year's white paper is entitled: "Supporting the Reform Process - The EBC Report on the Japanese Business Environment 2001" The English version is now in the hands of the printer, leaving adequate time for printing and delivery before the White Paper Launch on October 22. The English version was also delivered a week ago to the company handling the translation, but by the time we receive the fully translated and edited version, there will be only just over a week to have it printed. For the printed Japanese version to be available for distribution at the launch, there will be no more than 1 day at the most for the committees to look at their respective translated sections and send us suggested corrections before it is sent to the printer. You will receive your section around October 11 and I request your cooperation for a quick review to allow us to print the Japanese version in time for the event. Considering that work on the white paper started officially only at the end of June and that the summer break interrupted the process, we sincerely thank everyone for their kind cooperation so far for the amazingly rapid production of the report.

Launch of EBC White Paper 2001

As you all know, there will be a luncheon on October 22 to launch the white paper. I have attached the flyer/reply form again along with this e-news bulletin in case you have not yet responded. We are now proceeding with an outreach to the non-European business communities for participation, but before we reach full capacity, I want to be sure that all interested members of the EBC have replied and will not miss out on a seat. In addition to Ambassador Juul Jorgensen, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Japan, almost all of the European national ambassadors will be present as well as Mr. Fernando Valenzuela of the European Commission's Directorate-General for External Relations, who will be in Japan to hand over the EC's deregulation proposals to the Japanese government the following day. We are also expecting good press attendance at the event. Please support the EBC by being part of a large European presence at the lunch. If you are one of the many who have already signed up, please ignore this message. But if you haven't replied yet, don't miss out. The reply form is attached.

Successful EBC Telecom Carriers' Workshop

On September 19, the EBC Telecommunications Carriers Committee, chaired by Ms. Lisa Suits of C&W IDC Inc. (Japan), held a highly successful half-day EBC workshop jointly with the Keidanren on the topic of telecommunications reform in Japan. Some 100 people or more attended the event, which was opened by Ambassador Juul Jorgensen, Head of the Delegation of the EC in Japan. The EBC would like to thank Lisa and everyone involved in the organization of this high-profile event.

Request for Participation in TV Food Program

The EBC Secretariat has been requested by the Nikkei Group to provide the name of a European woman who is a keen cook of European food and who might be interested in taking part in a series of 30-minute TV programs that will be produced by Nikkei Eizo for the BS Japan network. The first filming will take place in late October. If anyone is interested or has a spouse, partner or friend, who is interested, please contact me (Alison Murray: ebcam@gol.com or Tel: 3263-6225) as soon as possible.
