IHI Adopts General-Purpose 3-D CAD System For Shipbuilding
Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. has adopted a general-purpose three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) system at its shipbuilding division for the first time. The shift from the firm's two-dimensional CAD system, developed in-house, to the new one is aimed at accelerating development work and reducing production costs by exchanging 3-D data with subcontractors. The company will initially utilize the "NX" CAD system of U.S.-based UGS Corp. to build destroyers for the Defense Agency, and then expand its use to merchant vessels. Since NX enables engineers to simulate the functions and pressure of drive components on computer screens, construction times will be shortened. (The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, June 02, 2005)
