Details: Employee vs Entrepreneur

Many of us have been raised to believe that the best way to become financially secure is to get a sensible job and earn regular income.

But as an employee, aren't you willfully putting yourself into a subservient position each day - one that isn't at all secure when at any given time someone in a superior position can press a few buttons and reduce your income? Regardless of the number of hours and energy you put into your job, doesn't your ultimate fate lie in the hands of your boss? Can you have therefore have true job security when you have little control over your own compensation journey?

The answer to these tough questions led Catherine O'Connell to quit her job and become an entrepreneur in a traditionally rigid industry: law.

Law and Disorder

Catherine, who will lead the next in our series of Small is GREAT events, "Law and Disorder", says:

"The key to successfully transitioning from being an employee to becoming your own boss requires discipline and a change of mindset. When you work for others, you may wait to be told what to do; as an entrepreneur, you are suddenly driving all the big decisions, and every smaller step that follows also belongs to you."

On the evening of June 6, Catherine will assure us that building a business is not for the faint of heart. But, if you're willing to work slightly crazy hours, be surrounded by a bit of disorder, delay gratification and learn from your failures, you can build both a business and a life that is truly your own. After all, "Life is too short to be living somebody else's dream."
